In a recent drive to boost safety across transportation systems, the Karnataka government mandated the installation of AIS 140 compliant devices, including vehicle location tracking (VLT) systems and emergency panic buttons in public and national permit vehicles. However, despite the critical importance of these regulations, compliance rates remain startlingly low, with only 1,979 out of 604,000 vehicles meeting the requirements as the November deadline approaches.

The mandate for AIS 140 devices came into effect on December 1, with an initial compliance deadline set for the following November. These devices are essential for real-time monitoring and providing emergency response capabilities, which are crucial in managing fleet safety and ensuring passenger security. Despite the clear benefits, the compliance rate is less than 0.5% of the total vehicles that need to be equipped with these systems.
